CURTIS WILEY SINGS THE MUSIC OF SAM COOKE
TWIST THE NIGHT AWAY WITH STORIES AND THE MUSIC OF THE KING OF SOUL, SAM COOKE
SEPTEMBER 2, 2022, AT FEINSTEIN’S/54 BELOW, BROADWAY’S SUPPER CLUB
FORT WORTH, Texas (December 2021) – Casa Mañana’s Reid Cabaret Theatre to be featured at NYC’s Feinstein’s/54 Below on September 2, 2022.
Originally produced by Wally Jones in September 2021, Casa Mañana debuted You Send Me: A Salute to the Life and Music of Sam Cooke starring Curtis Wiley. The show drew sell-out crowds for the duration and even prompted attendance by one of Mr. Cooke’s daughters who said, “It was truly my pleasure to join you and the outstanding cast and musicians. What an honor to listen to great singers (and Curtis and his group were exceptional) who cover my dad’s music and yet stay true to their own talents and not try to imitate. Curtis and his group were the best I’ve heard!!” The success of the show has led Casa Mañana to partner with Feinstein’s 54/Below in NYC to host a one-night-only event. Music Director Eugene Gwozdz will accompany Mr. Wiley, along with band members and backup singers from Fort Worth.
Twist the night away with the stories and music of the King of Soul, Sam Cooke. Singer, songwriter, entrepreneur and civil rights activist, Cooke fused soul and pop, pioneering the sound for future R&B artists. In 1960 his career skyrocketed from his first secular single “You Send Me,” which was followed by the chart-toppers “Chain Gang,” “Another Saturday Night” and “Cupid.” “A Change Is Gonna Come,” released following his untimely death, is regarded as the anthem for the civil rights movement. These timeless hits have been covered by musicians from Aretha Franklin to Van Morrison and Otis Redding to John Lennon, securing his lasting legacy.
