J Savage stars as “Davey” in Disney’s Newsies, opening this Saturday! His debut Casa Mañana production runs June 4-12.
We are thrilled to have Mr. Savage in Texas for this exhilarating production. “I had never seen Newsies in full until I got this audition. You know how a lot of people are with Game of Thrones? They won’t get into it because the hype is so much? Well, that was me with Newsies. But now, I can’t get enough!”
When asked what excites him the most about the show, J says, “Getting to sing this incredible score! It’s just one banger after another.”
J’s career has had an exciting path, “I moved to New York in 2018 and had some incredible opportunities at The Muny, Sacramento Music Circus and The Kennedy Center. In early 2020, I was playing David in Seesaw off-Broadway when the whole world shut down.” While many artists found themselves out of work, J made an incredible decision. “I bought a van, moved west, and worked at a preschool in Yellowstone National Park. I recount and compose this experience in my one-man show Farewell to the West.” His show, complete with original music, was featured at Feinstein’s/54 Below and The Green Room 42.
He credits one of his incredible teachers, J. Austin Eyer, as instrumental in his career. “[They] helped me transition from student to professional and never gave up on me, even when I was ready to give up on myself.” Yet another reason why educators are so invaluable.
To his younger self, he says only this, “Be yourself. Don’t waste a second trying to be someone else.”
We asked our whole cast to share one good thing. It could be anything positive in their life, big or small. J shares, “I’m doing my first solo backpacking trip this summer!”
You don’t want to miss J’s talent on stage this June 4-12. Get tickets here.
